In the Seattle metro area, the additional snow will cause major disruptions to travel and daily routines, including an extended stretch of school closures, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski. Hundreds of flights were canceled Sunday, and more are on tap for Monday.
Temperatures have also reached record lows, falling into the teens or single digits in many areas. It was 9 degrees in Arlington, Washington, early Sunday. The weather service said that was colder than the Arctic coast or North Slope of Alaska.
The wintry weather has fallen on a city much more accustomed to rain than snow. Seattle normally averages only 0.7 inches of snow each February.
"This February in Seattle is going to be remembered for brutal winter weather for many folks not used to it," Weather.us meteorologist Ryan Maue said last week.
However, the unusual weather was not all doom and gloom for some in the Pacific Northwest. During a break between storms, some Seattle residents flocked to neighborhood hills over the weekend with skis, sleds, laundry baskets – and even a kayak.

While 14.1 inches of snow is certainly a lot for Seattle, it's still only the 8th-snowiest month on record, the weather service said. And It's a long way from the city's all-time snowiest month of 57.2 inches in January of 1950.

We have a couple of weather systems set to bring wintry precipitation to western Washington. The first, weaker system moved through last night dropping 1-4" of additional snow, while the second, stronger system will provide a mixed bag of snow, rain, sleet, and even freezing rain later Monday into Tuesday. But a common thread of poor travel conditions everywhere later Monday and Tuesday.
Monday will start with leftover flurries or light snow showers but the precipitation takes a break mid-morning to midday. The second, stronger system begins to push precipitation into the Puget Sound region by early to mid-afternoon. There are a lot of questions with this storm regarding precipitation type. Right now, it looks like mostly snow from Everett northward including the Hood Canal and a wintry mix from Seattle southward.
A wintry mix means we could see a mixture of rain, snow, sleet, and freezing rain. This will likely impact snow totals. If it were mostly snow, we'd be looking at at least 6" of new snowfall. With the warmer air in play, we may see less.
Keep in mind that this will be a difficult, changing forecast, and we may see a wide range of precipitation type during this next event. And keep in mind even when it changes to rain, in many areas, especially on secondary roads, you will have liquid water falling on icy roads which may be more slippery than just the snow. And temperatures will not warm that much this week so it will take a long time for the ice to melt off the roads and sidewalks.
Areas that will likely see the most snowfall include the Hood Canal, northern slopes of the Olympics, and Everett northward. It's here where 5-8" looks likely. Mountains could see 10-20" of new snow by Tuesday morning
Those impacted by the warmer air will see less snowfall, but still 2-6" looks possible over the Central Sound. Less accumulating snow the farther south you go.
Regardless, plan on slippery travel Monday afternoon through much of Tuesday. Snow chances wrap up early Wednesday morning.
After another brief break Wednesday afternoon through much of Thursday, another weather system brings more chances for lowland snow Thursday night into Friday.
